What is a Smart Grid? & it’s benefits

A smart grid is the modern version of an electric grid. It is based on digital technology. Smart grid devices transmit information in such a way that enables ordinary users, operators, and automated devices to quickly respond to changes in smart grid condition systems.

What does it do?

Smart grids permit monitoring and analysis of real-time data collection relating to electricity; manage supply and demand of this data. This enables efficient controlling, generating and consumption of electricity.

Why was it introduced?

Smart Grids are introduced with the main purpose of controlling and dealing with global warming and becoming energy independent. They hold the power of transforming the energy industry to be reliable, available and efficient. Additionally, they also contribute to economic and environmental security.

It is used to supply electricity to the end users through two-way communication of electric data, like modular switches rather than a one-way flow.

What are its benefits?

The benefits related to the Smart Grid include:

  • Faster restoration of electricity after power troubles
  • Reduced operations and management costs for utilities
  • Lower power costs for consumers
  • More efficient transmission of electricity
  • Lower electricity rates
  • A higher number of integration of large-scale renewable energy systems
  • Enhanced security
