Matter Camera Solution

Espressif Systems announced Matter Camera Solution availability for the ESP32-P4, enabling brands and developers to build smart-home cameras that integrate seamlessly across Matter-enabled ecosystems.

With Matter 1.5 adding support for camera-class device types, the standard now extends to products including security cameras, video doorbells, and intercom camera nodes. Espressif’s implementation allows ESP32-P4–based camera designs to join Matter ecosystems using standardized device model, secure communication, and cross-platform interoperability.

The Matter camera implementation on ESP32-P4, a first of its kind implementation for Microcontroller (MCU)-class systems running an RTOS. When compared with traditional camera systems, this approach of using an MCU based camera enables lower power consumption enabling battery operated designs, stronger security with reduced attack surface and faster startup providing better responsiveness.

The solution uses the ESP32-P4 as the main application processor, handling camera input, multimedia processing, AI workloads and system control, while Wi-Fi connectivity is enabled using a companion wireless SoC such as ESP32-C5 or ESP32-C6. This architecture allows compute and connectivity to be scaled independently, offering flexibility across different product designs. For use cases requiring wired networking, Ethernet-based Matter camera implementations are also supported.
