Rohde & Schwarz high-efficiency transmitter powers next-gen broadcast services in Serbia

ETV selects R&S TH1 transmitter to reduce energy consumption and enhance mobile services with 5G Broadcast

ETV (Emisiona tehnika i veze), Serbia’s public broadcaster, has selected Rohde & Schwarz to upgrade its core transmitter site at Avala, serving the capital city of Belgrade. The project will deploy the first 5G Broadcast transmitter in Serbia, to boost the country’s broadcasting capabilities ahead of EXPO 2027.

The collaboration builds on a long-standing relationship between Rohde & Schwarz and ETV that dates back to 2012 when the company supplied high and medium power transmitters and gap fillers. The current project includes the installation of 4 pieces TH1 4.5kW transmitters in configuration 3+1, for DVB-T2 broadcasting and a R&S TH1 1kW transmitter for dedicated 5G Broadcast services. ETV chose Rohde & Schwarz for the critical upgrade because of the company’s proven reliability and deep understanding of existing infrastructure.

“Adding 5G Broadcast is vital to the long-term sustainability for ETV,” said Sava Savic, General Manager of ETV. “The project demonstrates our commitment to innovative solutions that meet current needs and prepare us for the future of broadcasting.”

Philipp Stipek from Rohde & Schwarz, stated, “We are thrilled to partner with ETV on this pivotal project. The upgrade will provide significant benefits, including improved stability and uptime of broadcasting services for the Belgrade region. The high efficiency of the TH1 transmitters will also help lower energy consumption and reduce ETV’s environmental footprint.”

The 5G Broadcast transmitter is scheduled to begin operating in Q3 of 2026 and will be ETV’s fifth TH1 transmitter in operation. The project proves once more that Rohde & Schwarz is a leading provider of 5G Broadcast technology that will allow ETV to offer enhanced mobile services in partnership with mobile network operators to improve their quality and coverage.
