K J Somaiya Institute of Technology (KJSIT), Mumbai, an esteemed autonomous engineering institute, successfully concluded a one-day offline workshop on Probing the Research Process: from Idea to Impact.”

With participation from over 57 institutions the workshop fostered networking and collaboration opportunities around key themes such as modern research methods and ethical publication practices. Focusing on the research journey, from problem formulation to impactful outcomes, it aimed to equip research scholars and faculty members with tools to integrate the latest industry practices, curriculum advancements, and institutional frameworks.

The workshop featured a panel of speakers, including Dr. Raghunath Shevgaonkar, Former Provost of Somaiya Vidyavihar,  Padma Shri Prof. Deepak B. Phatak, Professor Emeritus, IIT Bombay, Prof. N. C. Shivaprakash from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, and Dr. Nadir Nizar Ali Charniya, Professor, Vivekanand Education Society’s Institute of Technology, Mumbai.

Organised by Dr. Vivek Sunnapwar, Principal of KJSIT, and Dr. Hariram Chavan, Professor and PhD coordinator at KJSIT Mumbai, the programme began with Dr. Raghunath Shevgaonkar’s session on “How to Formulate a Research Problem.” He offered valuable insights into identifying research gaps, appreciating originality, and aligning research goals with societal and academic priorities. He alsohighlighted the illustrations on AI as a modern means and the discoveries and results it has generated. “As technology evolves, our approach to research must adapt to it as well. Artificial intelligence is reshaping how we solve problems. Every modern researcher must leverage this tool because this is where impactful change begins,“.

Followed by Padma Shri Prof. Phatak’s engaging talk on “Preparing for the Changing Landscape of Research in the Digital Century,” which highlighted the growing significance of digital tools, interdisciplinary studies, and collaborative open-access models. Prof. N. C. Shivaprakash spoke on “Paradigm Change in Research – Opportunities and Challenges,” focusing on innovation, ethical practices, and cross-domain collaboration to address global challenges. The final session, “Navigating WOS, Scopus, and Pitfalls of Predatory Journals,” was conducted by Dr. Nadir Nizar Ali Charniya, who provided practical advice on selecting credible publication platforms and avoiding predatory journals.

Delighted by the research-oriented workshop, Dr. Vivek Sunnapwar emphasised how this would benefit the research community that strives to deploy high-quality research tools. In his remarks, he appealed, “In a time of rapid technological change, innovation guided by ethical values is essential as ever. We must inspire the next generation of researchers to balance originality with responsibility.”
