Batteryless sensor for IoT network edge

The Internet of Things (IoT) is everywhere. Although it is powerful, it also brings some challenges. Each sensing element is by definition an electronic device, and all electronic devices have in common the need for a power supply to operate.

When deployed in small places such as homes and offices, it is relatively easy to power the sensors, whether they are wired or even button batteries that are replaced. However, due to the wide and wide deployment of environmental sensors, it is usually in remote, large spaces such as factories and buildings. Therefore, the use of a wired power supply is inefficient, and replacing the battery is often inconvenient. In fact, the same problem exists with sensors that are embedded in places that are close to but difficult to access, such as the center of a machine.

The number of sensors currently deployed is already in the billions, and this number will only continue to grow, showing no sign of slowing down. So, how can this problem be solved?

ON Semiconductor’s smart passive sensor, Smart Passive SensorsTM (SPS), is a wireless batteryless sensor that monitors various parameters such as temperature, pressure, humidity, or distance at the edge of the network. When monitored by an RF reader (such as ON Semiconductor’s TagReader), the SPS ‘captures’ energy from the measurement signal and then quickly and highly accurately reads the sensor data.

Combining SPS technology with the newly released smart passive sensor development kit (SPSDEVK1) provides a complete sensing solution including a UHF SPS reader hub, UHF antenna, temperature sensor, a power supply, and an Ethernet cable. TagReader software is also included to read the SPS and implement the full functionality of the tag, providing a comprehensive system solution.

TagReader software automatically detects the type of tag attached and reads the sensor’s data graphically at a specified time. The graphical user interface (GUI) can configure all system parameters related to the measurement process and reconfigure them as needed. As a result, even users who use SPSDEVK1 for the first time can quickly and easily configure the system to measure, summarize, and analyze data for a variety of fully wireless, battery-less IoT applications.

With a solution like SPSDEVK1, IoT solutions are no longer required to be purchased from multiple vendors; and because of the ability to quickly configure and modify multi-sensor IoT applications in hard-to-reach locations, it saves time and money.
