Jammu and Kashmir is a state in northern India. Jammu and Kashmir consists of three regions: Jammu, the Kashmir Valley and Ladakh. Srinagar is the summer capital, and Jammu is the winter capital.

The Smart Cities Mission was launched in June 2015 to improve basic urban infrastructure in India. The Smart City Proposals will received special focus on improving urban mobility for traffic and pedestrians, solid and liquid waste disposal, scientific management of water bodies and core area development.

Union Minister of Housing and Urban Development Venkaiah Nadu announced the inclusion of Jammu and Srinagar in the smart city list at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi.
