Murata Broadens the Input and Output Ranges for Small DC-DC Converter

Murata today debuted the latest addition to its MonoBlock type point-of-load (POL) product lineup, expanding input/output range while reducing the mounting area by 50 percent compared to Murata’s conventional models. The new MYSGK02506BRSR DC-DC converter delivers superior heat dissipation in a small form factor, while optimizing components in a module and enabling high current density. Production of this converter will be begin in December 2017.

The input voltage range has been expanded from 13.5v to 42v, while the stable output range increased from 5v to 25v and a maximum output current of 6A. Murata has not only broadened the input/output range but also reduced the size of the MYSGK02506BRSR to a very small resin mold package (14.7 x 16.3 x 7.5mm), helping equipment manufacturers add more functionality in a thinner and smaller design footprint. The module simplifies the power supply design process and is equipped with peripheral components such as resistors and capacitors.

“The MonoBlock type POL minimizes power loss with Murata’s proprietary circuit technology, while improving heat dissipation due to the new packaging capabilities,” said Shuji Mikami, Senior Manager, planning and sales promotion, Power Modules, Murata. “This technology helps us respond to the need for higher features and smaller sizes from equipment manufacturers. The MYSGK02506BRSR is the latest addition to our MonoBlock lineup that will continue to grow.

Target Markets

The MYSGK02506BRSR DC-DC converter can support a variety of applications, including robotics and drones or unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). However, the module is ideal for three primary markets including:

・Industrial Equipment – Just like consumer devices, industrial equipment now feature more advanced hardware features and functionality in smaller and thinner designs. For example, a programmable logic controller (PLC) needs faster program processing for improved production efficiency, requiring more power from power supplies. Surveillance cameras also need more power as they evolve from conventional surveillance cameras to support higher definition recording and additional features such as drive functions for LED lights and camera. With Murata’s reduced footprint, all of these robust capabilities can be added while keeping the cameras at the same or smaller size.

・Medical Appliances – Healthcare providers looking to reduce the physical burden on patients are developing faster and more precise treatments using 4K and 8K ultra-high definition and 3D imaging. To enable these capabilities, the MYSGK02506BRSR is ideally suited for intermedia bus converters on control boards in medical devices, such as ophthalmology imaging equipment.

・USB Power Display (PD) Applications* – The new DC-DC converter can also be integrated with displays, projectors and other imaging monitors and solutions. Leveraging the broad range of voltage and power capabilities, connected devices no longer need additional AC power connections, because the MYSGK02506BRSR supplies power suitable for each device, as well as transmitting/receiving image information on laptops and other devices connected to the USB PD. In addition to regular power supply evaluation boards, Murata also will offer an evaluation board customized for USB PD to help accelerate widespread use of the USB PD.

Terminology

* USB PD (power delivery) was introduced in 2012, responding to the market demand for large power supply which was not conventionally available with conventional USB. It delivers up to 100W compared to USB1.1, which supports 2.5W, and USB 3.0, which supports 4.5W. USB PD also supports 5 – 20V, while conventional USB supports only 5V.
