Differentiate between routers, bridges and gateways

Bridges:-

  1. A bridge operates at the data link layer of the OSI model.
  2. A bridge transmits the frames between similar networks.
  3. Bridges are mostly used in LANs.
  4. A bridge is slower.

Routers:-

  1. A router operates at the network layer of the OSI model.
  2. A router transmits the packets only across networks using similar protocols.
  3. Routers are used in internetworking.
  4. A router is faster.

Gateways:-

  1. A gateway can operate in all seven layers of the OSI model
  2. A gateway can transfer the packets between different protocol networks.
  3. A common use of a gateway is to connect a LAN and an SNA.
  4. A gateway is much slower than a router.
