STMicroelectronics Established Leadership in Power Conversion with Its MasterGaN Family at electronica India 2021

STMicroelectronics, the semiconductor leader with a global footprint has showcased several online demos in Power & Energy, Electric Vehicles, AI & IoT at electronica India virtual edition held on 16-18 December 2021. An interesting section was ST’s Sustainability charter and long-term goals which included its commitment to be carbon neutral and source 100% renewable energy by 2027.

Power & Energy

Gallium Nitride has become the first choice for adapters, wireless chargers, energy storage systems, communication infrastructure and many such as it possesses inherent properties which are required for high power in a small device. Power density is a measure of how much power can be processed in a given space which is a key feature for power system designers. GaN power FETs offers high-speed, increased efficiency and higher power density while overcoming power losses and thermal performance challenges.  

Under Power and Energy portfolio ST showcased its MASTERGAN series which is unique in itself as it integrates a gate driver and two E-mode GaN transistors in a single package. The family is designed to offer next-generation compact and efficient chargers and power adapters for consumer and industrial applications up to 400W.

The family includes MasterGaN1, MasterGaN2, MasterGaN3, MasterGaN4, and MasterGaN5 devices. Among which MasterGaN3 and MasterGaN5 are under development while the rest three are in mass production. With ST’s advanced power device, MasterGaN, makes chargers and adapters 4 times smaller and 3 times lighter and Solar Energy Storage System two times smaller and 3 times lighter and Fan-less compared with ordinary silicon-based solutions.

MASTERGAN can integrate numerous topologies due to half-bridge configuration possible as it has two GaN transistors and a single package makes it far less sensitive to noise than a discrete alternative.

MASTERGAN1 enable clean and efficient switching as it integrates an interlocking function, matched propagation delays, and differentiated turn-on and turn-off gate currents. MASTERGAN1 package measures only 9 mm x 9 mm is thus solving the critical size constraints. The MASTERGAN1 features UVLO protection on both the lower and upper driving sections, preventing the power switches from operating in low efficiency or dangerous conditions. The input pins extended range allows easy interfacing with microcontrollers, DSP units or Hall effect sensors. The MASTERGAN1 operates in the industrial temperature range, from -40°C to 125°C.

In addition to Power and Energy solutions, ST has also showcased 15 kW, three-phase Vienna rectifier with low-cost mixed-signal control for power factor correction, 15 kW, three-phase, three-level Active Front End (AFE) bidirectional converter for industrial and electric vehicle DC fast charging applications, BLDC motor controller for E-Rickshaw (1kW) under its solutions for Electric Vehicle.

Under AI and IoT, ST Displayed its wide range of STM32 microcontrollers and microprocessors, including the ultra-low-power STM32U5 MCUs that received SESIP and PSA level 3 certification and ST25 series to design an advanced, integrated NFC Reader+Tag solution.

In Bluetooth low energy portfolio ST Demonstrated, BlueNRG-Mesh, a software solution for connecting multiple Bluetooth Low Energy devices in Mesh networks. It enables true two-way communication between Bluetooth-enabled devices in secure, integrated, and range-extending Mesh networks. 6LoWPAN solution for smart metering application and Bluetooth-based smart plug.
