Jellyfish + Edge AI: Grinn and Synaptics Showcase the Synaptics Coralboard™ at Google I/O 2026

Synaptics Coralboard – Grinn, a full-cycle technology company specializing in advanced IoT and embedded hardware development, marks a major milestone this week. The Synaptics Coralboard™, developed by Grinn in collaboration with Synaptics and Google Research, takes center stage at Google I/O 2026.

Grinn is responsible for the full hardware design of the Coralboard™. At its heart is Grinn’s production-grade AstraSOM-261x – a system-on-module developers can drop straight into their final product. Prototype and production on one piece of silicon means reduced engineering risk and faster time to market.

From Prototype to Product

The platform is powered by the Synaptics Astra™ SL2619 dual-core SoC running at 2GHz, paired with 2GB DDR4 DRAM and a 1 TOPS NPU subsystem. It can handle both CNN and transformer-based workloads. Throughout the design process, Grinn focused on keeping the form factor compact, while ensuring the board is rich in the interfaces developers need:

  • MIPI CSI camera input,
  • DSI display connectivity,
  • I2S digital audio I/O,
  • mikroBUS™ and Qwiic-compatible expansion headers
  • M.2 slot for Wi-Fi®/Bluetooth® connectivity.

“Watching the Synaptics Coralboard come to life at Google I/O is a proud moment for our team,” said Robert Otręba, CEO, Grinn. “Developers can take an idea from prototype to production on the same hardware – and with Gemma 3 running on device, straight out of the box, they’re not starting from zero on Edge AI application development. This is a platform you can build on from day one.”

“We are very excited to put the Synaptics Coralboard directly into developers’ hands at Google I/O,” said Billy Rutledge, Director, Google Research. “Coralboard makes it dramatically easier to bring advanced AI to the Edge. By pairing efficient, AI-native hardware with an open software stack, this platform lowers the barrier to building private, always-on experiences that run all day in power-constrained environments. Our collaboration reflects a shared commitment to accessible, secure Edge AI for developers everywhere.”

Jellyfish on the Edge

At Google I/O 2026, the Coralboard is at the heart of Jellectronica – a live, AI-powered musical performance that brings together computer vision, real-time inference, and generative audio.

An NPU-accelerated YOLOv8 object detection model running directly on the Coralboard tracks the movement of jellyfish from the Monterey Bay Aquarium via a live stream. That motion data is then translated into control signals that drive a generative music performance powered by Google DeepMind’s Lyria Realtime model.

Beyond the demo, the Coralboard supports hardware-accelerated Gemma™ 3 270M out of the box, and works with the open-source, MLIR-based Synaptics Torq™ toolchain – giving developers a unified workflow for building, optimizing, and deploying vision, audio, and generative AI workloads.

“We’re at a tipping point where AI is moving out of the cloud and into everyday devices. The Coralboard is designed to accelerate that shift—giving developers and OEMs a fast path to build and deploy real-time, multimodal AI products for the Edge at scale. Together with Google, we’re helping enable a new class of intelligent, always-on systems where performance, power efficiency, and on-device intelligence define the user experience,” said Vikram Gupta, SVP & GM, Edge Compute & Connectivity Solutions Division, Synaptics.

Attendees at Google I/O 2026 stand the chance to take home a limited-edition Coralboard, engineered to minimize setup time and maximize time spent building.

Built Together

The Synaptics Coralboard is built on a true multi-partner collaboration. Synaptics contributes its Astra SoC platform, Torq software ecosystem, and AI expertise. Google Research brings Coral NPU technology. Grinn delivers the hardware design, SoM integration, and production-ready engineering that ties it together.
