RECOM Goes Discrete

New Discrete DC/DC Converter Components Available Now.

RECOM is launching a new range of Power ICs and SMD transformers to allow customers to build their own discrete DC/DC isolated power supplies. The range includes the RVP6501, a pin-compatible second-source alternative to the popular 6501-type push-pull transformer driver IC.

The RVP6501 transformer driver IC operates from a 2.8V to 6VDC supply voltage but can withstand 10V transients without damage. It delivers 500mA across the entire input voltage range which exceeds the 6501-type specification of 300mA at 5V and 150mA at 3.3V. Like the 6501-type, it features break-before-make switching, but unlike the original, it detects the gate drive voltages to adaptively adjust the dead time spacing to automatically compensate for any thermal, load current and ageing drift in the gate threshold voltage. In addition, the RVP6501 monitors the transistor current to provide continuous short-circuit and overload protection. These two features of precise switch timing and over-current protection avoid the risk of flux imbalance core saturation, one of the main disadvantages of the push-pull topology.

“For over 50 years, RECOM has been a technology leader in DC/DC modules, a position only maintained by a constant flow of new ideas and continual improvements in quality, reliability and performance. The RVP6501 is an improved version of the industry standard 6501-type transformer driver but at a significantly lower cost” comments Sven Krumpel, Project Manager IC & Solutions, RECOM.

Parts include a three-year warranty. Samples and OEM pricing are available from all authorized distributors or directly from RECOM.
