Flexible Heaters for Space Applications – Minco’s All-Polyimide (AP) flexible heaters are designed for demanding space environments, combining an all-polyimide construction with low outgassing, radiation resistance, lightweight construction and operation across a temperature range of -200°C to 260°C. Astute Group is an authorised distributor and design-in partner for Minco, providing access to its flexible heating, temperature sensing, flex circuit and instrumentation technologies across EMEA and beyond.
All-polyimide construction for space applications
Minco’s AP heaters use etched-foil heating technology within an all-polyimide construction, with no internal adhesives. The supplied Minco product material specifies a maximum watt density of 120 W/in² (18.60 W/cm²), resistance density of 1,500 Ω/in² and a heater temperature range from -200°C to 260°C. The construction is also designed to accommodate curved surfaces and complex geometries.
Minco describes its AP range as a high-performance alternative to standard polyimide flexible heaters, with higher temperature capability and watt densities. They list a maximum operating temperature of 260°C and say the low-mass construction and factory lamination can save space and reduce cycle time.
For space applications, material selection and outgassing performance are key design considerations. Minco’s Space Flight Thermofoil products use low-outgassing materials, pressure-sensitive mounting adhesive and a construction made in compliance with NASA GSFC S-311-P-841. Minco states that its space-flight products are suitable for vacuum environments in accordance with NASA-RP-1061.
Minco specifies outgassing of 0.36% total mass loss and 0.01% collected volatile condensable material for its low-outgassing space-flight AP products. The manufacturer also states that the all-polyimide construction provides the highest radiation resistance of its flexible heating product offerings.
Thermal performance without adding unnecessary mass
Space hardware places tight constraints on volume and mass, making heater construction an important part of thermal design. Minco’s flexible heater range is intended to place heat directly where it is required, while its thin construction allows close coupling between the heating element and the surface being heated.
For the AP range, Minco specifies a maximum heater thickness of 0.012in (0.3mm) over the element. The product material also specifies a dielectric strength of 1,000 VRMS at 60Hz for one minute and a minimum insulation resistance of 1,000 megohms at 500VDC.
The AP construction supports custom profiling, with Minco offering round, rectangular and irregular shapes. The manufacturer also lists custom-engineered options and the ability to integrate optional sensors.
This flexibility allows heater geometry and heat distribution to be considered alongside the mechanical design rather than treating thermal management as a separate component choice. For systems with restricted installation space, the combination of thin construction, flexible geometry and high watt density can reduce the physical footprint required for thermal control.

Space-qualified heater options and sourcing support
Minco has manufactured high-reliability Space Flight Qualified heaters for more than 40 year. Its catalogue space-flight products use low-outgassing materials and are fabricated in compliance with NASA GSFC S-311-P-841. Minco also makes clear that catalogue products do not include the full Table I or Table II inspection, qualification or datasheets, with additional qualification and screening available through Minco where required.
This distinction is relevant when specifying heaters for a space programme because the required qualification and screening level needs to be established as part of the component selection process.
Astute Group provides access to Minco’s standard and customised thermal technologies as an authorised distributor and design-in partner. Astute’s Minco portfolio covers flexible heaters alongside temperature sensors, flex circuits and instrumentation, giving customers access to complementary thermal technologies.
For engineers developing spacecraft, satellite systems, vacuum instrumentation or other equipment exposed to demanding thermal conditions, the Minco AP range provides a flexible heater construction with defined temperature, electrical, dimensional and outgassing specifications. Astute can support the sourcing and design-in process, including access to Minco’s customised heater capability where standard configurations do not meet the mechanical or thermal requirements.
Minco’s space-focused AP technology therefore combines a compact flexible form factor with high-temperature capability, low-outgassing construction and radiation resistance. Through Astute’s authorised distribution and design-in partnership, these heater solutions are available alongside Minco’s wider thermal and sensing technologies for projects requiring controlled heating within constrained environments.
Damian Semple, Franchise Marketing Manager, comments: “Space thermal management can place tight constraints on both component size and material selection. Having access to a manufacturer that can provide standard and custom heater constructions gives engineers more scope to match the heater to the system rather than compromise the mechanical design.”
