OLED display with invisibly integrated camera
AUMOVIO has secured a major order to supply an OLED display unit featuring a camera invisibly integrated under the display. The technology was first presented at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, where it was named a CES Innovation Award Honoree. Now, the concept has resulted in a production order destined for use in a volume model of a European premium manufacturer.
“We are very pleased about the customer order, which was placed shortly after the initial innovation presentation. The order is a strong market signal and confirms that we and our strategy are on the right track. We focus on developing state‑of‑the‑art technologies and transitioning them to series production – to increase safety and comfort in mobility with exciting new cockpit designs,” explains Pavel Prouza, Head of the User Experience (UX) business area at AUMOVIO.
Increased user acceptance thanks to invisible camera integration
AUMOVIO is the first in the industry to bring a display solution into series production where the camera module, relevant for comfort and safety functions, is integrated invisibly under the display – boosting user acceptance and unlocking new design possibilities for a clean cockpit. Studies by AUMOVIO show that drivers do not like having a visible camera pointed at them. When camera-based functions are integrated discreetly, however, they are not only accepted, but welcomed – much like smartphones, where face recognition has become the norm.
“With the camera invisibly integrated under the active area of the driver display, we have opened the door to the next generation of exciting and minimalistic cockpit designs – while making a major contribution to advancing safety‑relevant assistance features through wider user acceptance,” adds Prouza.
Transparent display: special pixel design and OLED technology
The camera is positioned under the active display area to ensure an optimal view of the driver. This enables safety functions such as attention and drowsiness detection. With its innovative pixel design, the display area above the camera delivers a seamless viewing experience – eliminating the need for bulky camera modules that do not match modern and minimalistic vehicle interior designs.
The OLED technology used is considered leading-edge in the premium segment due to its outstanding color gamut and deep black contrast values, which meet the highest expectations in terms of image quality.

Positioning the camera under the display not only provides an optimal view of the driver, but it also allows a clean cockpit design.
