APAC fixed wireless access subscriptions to grow at 12.5% CAGR between 2026 and 2031, forecasts GlobalData

Asia-Pacific Fixed Wireless Access – The total fixed wireless access (FWA) connections in Asia-Pacific (APAC) are projected to increase at a CAGR of 12.5% between 2026 and 2031, driven by growing demand for reliable, high-speed internet connectivity particularly in rural and underserved areas and where fiber deployments are not feasible, forecasts GlobalData, a leading intelligence and productivity platform.

GlobalData’s Asia-Pacific Total Fixed Communications Forecast (Q2 2026) reveals that FWA connections in APAC will increase from 28 million in 2026 to 50 million by the end of 2031,  supported by the increasing availability of 5G networks, rising demand for home broadband, and the expansion of wireless broadband services by operators.

In August 2026, U Mobile in Malaysia launched ULTRA Home 5G Pro, a 5G-Advanced home broadband service offering speeds of up to 2 Gbps, with plans starting at MYR 98 ($24) per month. The service includes a Wi-Fi 7 router and a monthly data allowance of 2,000 GB, targeting households requiring high-speed connectivity for multiple devices and bandwidth-intensive applications.

In Indonesia, MyRepublic Indonesia launched its MyRepublic Air FWA service in April 2026, initially making it available for customers in Bali, Bandar Lampung, Pekanbaru, and Makassar. The operator also announced plans to progressively expand its availability to 180 cities.

Kantipudi Pradeepthi, Telecom Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “The evolution of 5G networks will be an important driver of FWA adoption across APAC. By leveraging wireless infrastructure, operators can extend broadband availability without deploying fiber connections to every household. This provides a flexible and potentially more cost-effective way to serve areas where fixed broadband infrastructure is limited, while enabling operators to address the growing demand for reliable, high-speed home connectivity.”

Markets such India, New Zealand, and Hong Kong, which are witnessing significant operator investments in 5G infrastructure, will see considerable growth in 5G FWA adoption in the coming years.

Evolving use cases across residential and business segments are expected to further support FWA adoption over the forecast period. Households increasingly rely on broadband for video streaming, remote working, online education, and connected devices, while small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) require reliable connectivity for cloud applications, digital payments, and video conferencing.

Pradeepthi continues: “Operators can address these requirements through flexible speed tiers, suitable data allowances, plug-and-play customer premises equipment (CPE), and bundled digital services. For instance, AIS in Thailand and One NZ in New Zealand offer FWA connectivity to deliver high-capacity broadband to homes and SMEs.”

Pradeepthi concludes: “The growing demand for reliable, high-speed connectivity across APAC is creating opportunities for FWA to complement fiber broadband and extend internet access to more households and businesses. Operators that combine competitive pricing, reliable network performance, easy-to-install equipment, and service plans tailored to different customer needs will be well positioned to attract new subscribers. As 5G coverage expands, FWA will play an increasingly important role in broadband market growth and provide operators with additional opportunities to monetize their network investments.”
