Hyderabad: LED streetlights for PVNR expressway soon

LED Streetlight

HYDERABAD: The PVNR elevated expressway, one of the country’s longest flyovers, will soon be illuminated with LED lights. The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) has decided to replace the existing High Pressure Sodium Vapour (HPSV) streetlights on the entire 11.5 km stretch with energy-efficient Light Emitting Diode (LED) lights. A total of 819 streetlights will be replaced at an estimated cost of Rs 1.86 crore.HMDA Metropolitan commissioner T Chiranjeevulu on Friday told Express that the LED streetlights would come up on the PVNR by August this year. Tenders would be floated within a couple of days, he added.

‘Power consumption charges will go down’

The idea behind the LED streetlights is providing better illumination on the expressway to prevent accidents or avoid vehicles from crashing into dividers and central medians etc.
Elaborating more, the commissioner said that HMDA incurs an average of Rs 6.50 lakh per month towards power consumption charges for the entire system up and down the elevated corridor where all along the stretch, 250 watts HPSV lamps are fitted. These lamps will be replaced with 120 watts LED lights which would reduce the power consumption charges by more than 60 per cent.

Further, the existing timer system which is provided at the of inauguration was not functioning properly and undergoing regular repairs causing inconvenience. The same is being operated manually making it difficult to maintain the long distance. It is proposed to provide feeder pillar box to maintain the system automatically with a timer replacing the old system.

16 floodlights to be fixed at underpass

Of the 819 LED lamps, 656 will be fixed on both sides of the elevated corridor, six on Approach Ramp-1, another six on Approach Ramp-2, 12 at Underpass at Aramghar Junction, 44 at trumpet interchange, viaduct and approaches totaling 724

Single arm 120 watts LED will be fixed on first Up Ramp (11), second down ramp (18), third down ramp (13), trumpet interchange Lop C and Loop D (18), second up ramp (18), third down ramp (13) and first down ramp at merging portion (4), totaling 95

About 16 of 90 watts floodlight will be fixed at underpass at Aramgarh Junction
